POKEMON

I first gained an interest in Pokemon when I was around eight years old. Immediately I was enraptured. The show, the cards, and most of all the games captured the imagination of my childhood self. My first game was Pokemon Diamond, shortly followed my Emerald and Platinum. Generation three and four were where I entered into the world of Pokemon. I have played thousands of hours. At university I found an excuse to write a six-thousand-word essay on the global reach of Pokemon, despite a two-thousand-word maximum. As I've aged my views on Pokemon has changed significantly, but I always find myself going back to the games over and over. Nothing has quite tickled my brain the same way that the catching, battling and exploration of those early Pokemon games. This page is dedicated to my own thoughts, forays and reviews of the Pokemon franchise.

Beginning in 2026, I started playing through all mainline Pokemon games. I aimed to play through each game with only original Pokemon. If I played a game with one Pokemon, I couldn't reuse that in another game. My teams are shown below along with a small review of them. Longer reviews are linked within each tab.

Fire Red & Leaf Green

My experience playing Pokemon LeafGreen and FireRed was one of nostalgia. I came at it like I had not played Pokemon before, casting away old knowledge and refusing to use the internet to help complete it. This made the game feel more like an adventure. Much of this game feels like a definitive addition of the earlier Blue and Red additions for the Gameboy. Much of these graphics and sounds, despite being almost entirely representative are incredibly evocative. The almost logographic elements leave room for my imagination to fill in the blanks rather than the realism of modern graphics found in Pokemon which aims to demonstrate the entirety world but fallshort.
